  Subject: form submits and success loads - but no emails send
  Posted: 12/18/2004 at 1:31:39 pm
  By: Lynn_L

Hello,

I am upgrading from v1.2 to 2.1.2 today. This first problem is unique to only one server I have to use. I can fill out the form and it appears to send .... then I see the success.html page. However, I do not received anything to my sendto, cc, nor a copy to the sender.

I think the problem has to do with this vague note from the hosting company:

(QUOTE FROM HOSTING COMPANY): Most mail scripts use a system program called sendmail to send form mail. All of our UNIX/Mac OS X servers run sendmail in submit-only mode to permit form processing. However, they are configured so that you must use the "-f" flag to set a "from" address on the outgoing message; this prevents many form vulnerabilities that allow spammers to hijack CGI scripts.

In the configuration for your script, there are two things you'll want to check

The "Path to sendmail" should be /usr/sbin/sendmail

Our servers are configured so that so that you must use the -f flag to set a "from" address on the outgoing message; this prevents many form vulnerabilities that allow spammers to hijack CGI scripts.

The proper syntax is -f (from address) -- eg -f john@doe.com

Most scripts will let you specify this in an "optional paramaters" or "sendmail flags" section. See the documentation for your specific script for more details.

(END QUOTE FROM HOSTING COMPANY)

I tried setting the send to email as -f lynn@domainname.com but it didn't change anything. I tried with and without a space between -f and the email address.

My hosting company is pathetic as customer service - how can I fix this?

Thanks,
-Lynn

Problem solved with hosting company.

If anyone else runs into this you solve it this way:
For the script itself:
$mailprog = "/usr/sbin/sendmail"; ## $mailprog = path to Sendmail on your server ##

should be changed to something like:
$mailprog = "/usr/sbin/sendmail -flynn\@domainname.com";

Note that the lack of a space between the -f and the e-mail is the correct syntax. I couldn't find what the actual "from" address the form uses is -- you can use just about anything for the -f paramater, but it has to be a valid e-mail.

Hope this helps others.

Good question.

Actualy you would keep:
$mailprog = "/usr/sbin/sendmail";

WHAT WOULD NEED TO CHANGE IS WHERE
you setup your from address's

IE.
$sendto{"1"} = "-flynn\@domainname.com";
$cc_to{"1"} = "-flynn\@domainname.com";

HOWEVER WITH THAT BEING SAID,

currently you can not set A DEFAULT for the FROM EMAIL, this is probably something I will want to add, for the next release.

Sorry about that! Newbie! The script seems to work okay- I get the Success! window. But, no email with the information. The test page is http://www.mainecraftsguild.com/formrequestapp.html

Any help will be appreciated! Thanks!
