Subject: Auto-Reply message is being sent to me instead to sender
  Posted: 01/15/2004 at 1:57:48 pm
  By: basic

First of all, I would like to say that this CGI script works really great.

However, I have one single problem that I'm not able to solve:
I've made a HTML page, which contains a form, including 3 fields: "firstname", "email" and "message".

So far, so good. Wenn I fill in the form, and enter an email-address in the "email" field, an Auto-Reply message (plain.mes) should be sent to the email-address I've just entered. This Auto-Reply message is being sent to the "1"-address configured in bizmail.cgi, instead of the senders-address?!

So, after completing the form, I'm receiving two emails: one confirmation that somebody has filled-in the form along with the data entered, and another which is the Auto-Reply.

The script is running on a Win2k-server and mail is being sent using smtp. If you need any additional information, please let me know!

Thanks in advance for any help!

PS: Ofcourse I'm entering a different email-address in the form as configured in the bizmail.cgi script :-)

Well it looks like you did alot of custom configuration to the script. There is nothing wrong with this, I just don't do support on it. What I would try is to start from scratch in a new directory in your cgi-bin and just see if you can get it to work genericaly. That may help you figure out what went wrong when you did all the customizing.

Ok Seth,

I'll try that!
Thanks for your help anyway!

If I find out what went wrong, I'll post a reply in here.

I downloaded and installed the the original script (without any modifications but the email-address), but my problem still exists.

I tried all possible settings, but I wasn't able to solve this... However, I found a workaround in disabling sending replies. Now only a single e-mail is being sent (to me) and the original sender doesn't become a confirmation.

Can you explain this work-around in some more detail?
"However, I found a workaround in disabling sending replies. Now only a single e-mail is being sent (to me) and the original sender doesn't become a confirmation."

I have exactly the same problem, and I really want to be able to use this cool autoReply feature. How do I do it (step-by-step please)?

Sure I can...

I just changed "send-reply" on the html page from "1" to "0". So, now replies aren't sent anymore.

However, as you already know, the problem is solved.

To whom it may conecern: the solution can be found in this thread: http://www.bizmailform.com/messageboard/view.phtml?thread=121

Did you try the new version from yesterday (Jan 26th). I did, but it still doesn't work (for me). Your experience?

I followed the instructions in the other topic (replacing the old bizmail.cgi with the new one). I configured the script but didn't had the time to test things.

Currently I'm at work and can't configure my server from here, but I'll do some tests tonight. I'll posts my results here.

Bas

Ok, I just did some tests.

Since I replaced the bizmail.cgi, I'm receiving CGI errors. This is the error that shows up in my browser:

-----------------------
CGI Error
The specified CGI application misbehaved by not returning a complete set of HTTP headers. The headers it did return are:

Can't call method "mail" on an undefined value at smtp.cgi line 79.
-----------------------

I didn't made any changes to smtp.cgi, so I can't explain why this happens.

I just downloaded bizmail9.zip again and replaced my original smtp.cgi with the one from the archive, but I'm still getting the same error.

@Seth,
Is it possible to download the previous release of BizMailForm? I mean the one before you 'fixed' this 'reply-problem'. Although sending auto-replies didn't work in that release, it worked without cgi-errors.

I downloaded the new release and replaced my bizmail.cgi without making a backup. How dumb, I know... :-)

1. Your best beat on previous versions would be 1.5. 1.6-1.8 Had many errors, and are realy not supported.
However if you want to try 1.8 you can download here:
http://www.bizmailform.com/bizmail8.zip

2. I think the problem you are having with the internal errors, is either:
a. you don't have the correct path to SMTP
b. SMTP is not supported on your server

The reason I think it is a sendmail problem on your server is because line 79 is the line that connects to smtp.

3. are you on a Linux or Windows server

If you are on Linux I personaly would try using SENDMAIL. Works the best and generaly no problems, and is almost always supported
by hosts, and there are no draw back. The SMTP function is realy mainly for people on Windows servers, that
can not access SENDMAIL.

Basic you may want to download one more time and re-try. I re optimized a couple other features in the smtp.cgi and bizmail.cgi for certain OS's and I think it will work for you now.

Seth,

Thanks for your support!! I downloaded the updated v1.9 release and replaced my bizmail.cgi and smtp.cgi files with the ones from the archive. Then I reconfigured the bizmail.cgi to work with my site. After trying the form, the same error showed up in my browser. Then I took a closer look at the bizmail.cgi and noticed that I mis-spelled the hostname of my smtp-server... Arggghh!!

Now everything is working fine! Even the auto-reply does work!! :-)

Btw, I'm running the script on a Windows2000 Advanced Server machine.
