  Subject: Problem w/ required field checking
  Posted: 04/29/2004 at 5:27:36 pm
  By: toozoo

Hi there,

This package has been great! Well written, well documented, easy to use. But... I'm having a really weird problem.

When I fill out my form properly, it works as it should. When I leave a required field out of the form, everything works well too, except in one case.

That is, if it fails the required field check and any other field has a 5 or more digit numerical entry starting with 4-9 (but not 1-3) [Don't ask me!!! I just report the news....], then I get this error:

Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@indonesian-parrot-project.org and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
==
Note, there is nothing in my server error log.

Please help.

Thanks,

/emily

Ok, I see one problem right off the bat. When you post the form with missing required fields and then re-post with still missing required fields you get a different error page.

As for the number thing... this is very strange and I have never seen this before... I will look into it, however while I am, I would check with your host. They may have configured there server in a certain way that makes this happen. ALSO if you get an internal server error you should get an error message. So check with the host on that to. I will let you know when I find something... Will probably be tom.

Ok, I found it. Good job, you actualy found a bug. I patched and all is working fine now. Just re-download bizmail v2.1 and just RE-UPLOAD required.cgi.

THE ONLY NEW CHANGES ARE THUS:

On the personalization of SELECT and Radio Fields, the new way of doin it is thus:

SELECTED FIELDS - Example: <%SEL%FORMNAME {_VALUE}%>
NOTICE: there is an: _
after: {
and before the VALUE of the selected item. (THIS IS A BUG FIX FROM V2.1)
Example: If the field was a drop down select box:
<select name="FORMNAME">
<option value="choice 1">choice 1</option>
<option value="choice 2">choice 2</option>
<option value="choice 3">choice 3</option>
<option value="choice 4">choice 4</option>
</select>

The below tags in this example would equal " selected" if the option was selected.
(REMEMBER THE _ BEFORE THE VALUE!!!)

<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 1}%>
<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 2}%>
<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 3}%>
<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 4}%>

SO FOR INSTANCE (if "choice 2" was selected on the previous page):
THEN THE BELOW: (REMEMBER THE _ BEFORE THE VALUE!!!)
<select name="FORMNAME">
<option value="choice 1"<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 1}%>>choice 1</option>
<option value="choice 2"<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 2}%>>choice 2</option>
<option value="choice 3"<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 3}%>>choice 3</option>
<option value="choice 4"<%SEL%FORMNAME {_choice 4}%>>choice 4</option>
</select>

WOULD BE CONVERTED TO REAL HTML TEXT OF:
<select name="FORMNAME">
<option value="choice 1">choice 1</option>
<option value="choice 2" selected>choice 2</option>
<option value="choice 3">choice 3</option>
<option value="choice 4">choice 4</option>
</select>

RADIO FIELDS - Example: <%RADIO%FORMNAME {_VALUE}%>
NOTICE: there is an: _
after: {
and before the VALUE of the selected item. (THIS IS A BUG FIX FROM V2.1)
Example: If the field was a drop down select box:
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="1"> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="2"> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="3"> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="4"> Choice One

The below tags in this example would equal " checked" if the option was checked.
(REMEMBER THE _ BEFORE THE VALUE!!!)

<%RADIO%choices {_1}%>
<%RADIO%choices {_2}%>
<%RADIO%choices {_3}%>
<%RADIO%choices {_4}%>

SO FOR INSTANCE (if "2" was checked on the previous page):
THEN THE BELOW: (REMEMBER THE _ BEFORE THE VALUE!!!)
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="1"<%RADIO%choices {_1}%>> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="2"<%RADIO%choices {_2}%>> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="3"<%RADIO%choices {_3}%>> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="4"<%RADIO%choices {_4}%>> Choice One

WOULD BE CONVERTED TO REAL HTML TEXT OF:
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="1"> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="2" checked> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="3"> Choice One
<input type="radio" name="choices" value="4"> Choice One

This is updated as well in the readme in the zip file.

Thanks for the catch, if you have any further questions let me know.

Seth

Just to close the loop, I installed your fix and it did, in fact, solve the original problem I reported.

Thanks again,

/emily
